    2016 B1G Tournament Photos

I had the pleasure of getting to tag along with the team to Indianapolis to document the run through the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament.  A photo-blog was developed and posted to the Nebraska Athletics Exposure account.  Check out the photo expose here.

Here are a hand-full of images that I’ve pulled for one reason or another that I enjoyed.

    NFL Combine

The NFL Combine extended an invite to four Huskers, two seniors and two juniors.  Throughout the combine process, their story was tracked and promoted. Along with posting from official accounts, prominent alumni were leveraged to help tell the story, wish the athletes good luck, and reach a social vertical we couldn’t reach by ourselves.

The following images were concept pieces, but ultimately scrapped as they gave off a “funeral-like” impression … but I liked the clean look, so I’m going to pretend we did use them.

With an official invite, we opted to take an approach that was a little closer in “voice” to our regular season.

    2016 Nebraska Baseball Poster

The initial concept was to present the 2016 Nebraska Baseball schedule poster as a feature film.  Five posters were developed, each one featuring one of the five seniors on the team.  The poster was sized to a traditional film poster, 27″ x 40″ and included the cast of characters listed below the schedule.  Listed below are some low res renderings of the posters.

A more traditional poster (24″ x 18″) was also created.  Below is a low res rendering of the poster:

With just a few days left before National Signing Day 2016, the Nebraska Football coaching staff was looking for any “flossy” imagery that would help snag some last-minute attention to the program.  Many of these images were altered with custom edits for each recruit in hopes to push them over the edge to Sign Big Red.150520---Price---fire 160121---Drive-the-Bus 160125---Linebackers 160121---Run-them-over 160125---Ground-Crew 160121---Restore-the-Pipeline 160121---Linebackers 160121---Greatness-Within-Reach160130---No-Limits 160128---Tight-Ends-3 160125---Tight-Ends 160125---Tight-Ends-2

What generally comes to mind when I think of Nebraska Softball is FUN.  The coaches, the players, the support staff all have an attitude of fun and light-heartedness that I wanted to carry through to the poster, but give it a little something different.  Featuring some of the photos during our photoshoot that showed off more personality of each athlete, I opted to take the 12″ x 26″ panoramic poster vertical, using a portrait orientation.

  • The Mighty Orion

    The Mighty Orion

The first clear night in weeks and I was itching to get out and try to get some images of Orion’s Nebula with the 5Ds I was borrowing from work.  Armed with a pretty crappy tripod – the $20 Walmart kind – and a remote trigger out of batteries, I still managed to have a pretty good time.

I choose the Nebula because it’s ridiculously easy to find as it’s faintly visible on a moonless night, out early enough I could still be in bed by midnight and didn’t need to set up my entire rig to get some great images.  The humidity mixed with the cold air made the stars sparkle, which looks cool when you look up, but makes for some challenges photographing the sky.  The stacked images came out extremely blue and needed quite a few extra curve corrections and masks to pull the reds out of the core.

Images were shot with a Canon 5Ds on a Canon 135mm f/2 lens at f/2.8 with a 4″ exposure at ISO 2000.  The final image is a composite of 90 stacked light frames calibrated and registered against 25 bias frames, 25 flat frames and 25 dark frames.  The stacking and initial color stretching was done with PixInsight and finished in Photoshop.

Below are several light frames straight off the camera, with no editing.  The final, stacked image is below.
